Employee Spotlight: Nishit Bangdiwala

While recognition is always appreciated, the greatest reward often comes from the sense of self-satisfaction and accomplishment that comes from solving problems, delivering results, and creating value for the organisation.

Could you share some insights into your background and how you came to join FLAG?

I am a finance professional with a strong foundation in accounting, financial control, and global operations, having worked across complex and multi‑geography environments. Early in my career, I was keen to build experience in a dynamic, international setup where I could go beyond core finance and contribute to business outcomes.

This led me to join FLAG in 2007, at a stage when the organisation was expanding its global footprint and strengthening its capabilities in the telecom space. What stood out then—and still does today—is the scale, ambition, and continuous evolution of the organisation, which offers a strong platform to grow while contributing meaningfully.

Over the years, my role has evolved from focusing on core finance responsibilities to taking on broader initiatives around finance transformation, systems, and team leadership. It has been a rewarding journey to grow alongside the organisation, continuously adapt to new challenges, and be part of its ongoing growth story.

What motivates you in your role at FLAG, and how do you maintain your inspiration?

What motivates me most is a strong sense of self-discipline, willpower, and the willingness to contribute meaningfully. There is a deep sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing that my work is adding value—whether it is strengthening financial processes, supporting business decisions, or helping the team grow.

I stay inspired by continuously learning, taking on new challenges, and pushing myself to improve. Equally important is seeing how our individual contributions come together to support the larger goals of the organisation. The dynamic environment at FLAG keeps things engaging, as no two days or challenges are the same, which naturally drives continuous learning and growth.

Is there a specific project or achievement at FLAG that you are particularly proud of?

Over a journey of nearly two decades at FLAG, it is difficult to point to a single achievement, as there have been multiple instances that required strong contribution, collaboration, and commitment—often involving long hours and working through challenging situations to ensure timely delivery, including critical reporting requirements under demanding circumstances.

That said, I take particular pride in being part of key finance transformation initiatives over the years—especially the ERP migrations for GCX and FLAG, first in 2016 and more recently during 2025–2026. These transformations have been significant in strengthening systems, improving process efficiency, and enhancing financial visibility for the business.

Alongside this, navigating changes in shareholders and evolving senior leadership has also been a defining part of the journey. Being able to stay flexible, adapt quickly, and continue contributing consistently across different phases of the organisation has been equally important and rewarding.

Beyond projects, one of the most satisfying aspects has been contributing to building a strong and capable team that can sustain and take forward these improvements.

How do you approach challenges and overcome obstacles in your work?

I believe in taking a structured and practical approach—starting with understanding , breaking the problem into tasks, and then working collaboratively towards a resolution. Assign tasks and believe strongly in teams ability to deliver is key aspect. Clear communication and a solution-oriented mindset are key in complex situations.

At the same time, overcoming challenges is never an individual effort. I have been fortunate to work with strong teams across finance sub-functions and other departments, whose support, collaboration, and ownership play a critical role in addressing challenges effectively. The ability to come together, align quickly, and work towards a common objective makes a significant difference.

There is also a deep sense of satisfaction in seeing challenges being resolved and achieving the desired outcomes, especially when it is the result of collective effort and commitment.

Who has had the biggest impact on your journey at FLAG, and how have they influenced you?

I have benefitted from working with strong leaders and supportive colleagues at FLAG who have encouraged open thinking, ownership, and a mindset of continuous improvement. Their guidance, trust, and approach to decision-making have played an important role in shaping my own leadership style.

At the same time, my journey has also been significantly influenced by my team members and colleagues across functions. Their commitment, perspectives, and collaboration not only help in delivering outcomes but also continuously challenge and improve the way we work.

Interestingly, some of the most valuable learnings have also come from observing how different individuals approach situations and achieve successful outcomes—even when I am not directly involved. These experiences have helped me develop a more balanced and practical approach to problem-solving and leadership over time.

How has your role evolved since joining FLAG, and what are you currently learning or trying to improve?

Over the past 19 years, my role at FLAG has evolved significantly. I have had the opportunity to work across various areas of finance, including Accounts Payable, Entity Accounting and Controls, Taxation, Fixed Assets, Financial Reporting, Compliance, and other core finance functions. These experiences have provided me with a well-rounded understanding of both operational and strategic aspects of finance.

As the organisation evolved, my responsibilities expanded beyond traditional finance operations to include finance transformation initiatives, ERP implementations, process improvements, governance, and team development.

Today, I continue to focus on strengthening my leadership capabilities, enhancing strategic thinking, and building high-performing teams. I am also keen to learn new technologies and explore how automation and digital solutions can help create more efficient processes and deliver greater value to the business. One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been the opportunity to continuously learn, adapt, and contribute in different ways as both the organisation and the finance function have evolved.

What advice would you offer to new employees or those striving to excel in their careers at FLAG

Be curious and never hesitate to ask questions. Take ownership early, step outside your comfort zone, and focus on understanding the business as a whole rather than just your specific function. Building strong relationships and collaborating across teams can accelerate both personal and professional growth.

Equally important is developing strong willpower, self-discipline, and a genuine hunger to make a meaningful contribution. While recognition is always appreciated, the greatest reward often comes from the sense of self-satisfaction and accomplishment that comes from solving problems, delivering results, and creating value for the organisation.

Above all, maintain a positive attitude, stay open to learning, and keep challenging yourself. Consistent effort, resilience, and a willingness to grow will create opportunities and help you build a rewarding career at FLAG.

What’s a small moment at FLAG that made a big impression on you?

One thing that has made a lasting impression recently is the positive shift towards building a culture of appreciation and recognition across the organisation. Over the years, I have seen teams come together to overcome challenges and deliver results, but what stands out today is how people are taking the time to acknowledge each other’s contributions, both big and small.

Whether it is a simple note of thanks, recognition during team meetings, or celebrating successes across functions, these moments help create an environment where people feel valued and motivated. It has significant impact on increasing engagement, collaboration, and overall team spirit. Seeing this appreciative culture continue to grow reinforces the importance of recognising the people behind the results.
